FINISSAGE OF THE EXHIBITION FREEMASONRY / IN FUTURUM performance by Jakub Woynarowski
In Futurum is a performance that combines drawing and sound. The work comprises objects and gestures derived from the tradition of freemasonry, among other sources. Immersed in an artistic context, a ritual set in the interiors of the Museum of Sculpture reveals new meanings. This setting seems to be of special importance in Jakub Woynarowski's apocryphal narrative devoted to the intellectual roots of the 20th century avant-garde, which date back to the tradition of Medieval mason guilds and Early Modern speculative freemasonry.
Yet another meaningful element is the architecture of the Palladian palace that houses the Museum – the Królikarnia. Dialogues with historic architecture feature frequently in Jakub Woynarowski's artistic practice. The most spectacular example was the project “Impossible Figures” at the Polish Pavilion during last year's Architecture Biennial in Venice. However, in “In Futurum”, the unique character of the venue is not limited to the architectural setting. The artist's performance will incorporate some of the holdings of the National Museum’s Furniture Department and original tools from Xawery Dunikowski's studio.
In Futurm is organised within the programme of the ceremonial finissage of the exhibition “Freemasonry. Pro publico bono,” presented at the main edifice of the National Museum in Warsaw as of September 2014.
